OBJECTIVES to investigate if a complementary therapy, Reiki, has any effect on indices of autonomic nervous system function. DESIGN Blind trial. SETTING/LOCATION Quiet room in an out-patient clinic. SUBJECTS Forty-five (45) subjects assigned at random into three groups. INTERVENTIONS Three treatment conditions: no treatment (rest only); Reiki treatment by experienced Reiki practitioner; and placebo treatment by a person with no knowledge of Reiki and who mimicked the Reiki treatment… Expand
Heart Rate Variability in a Study on Reiki Treatment
TLDR
Both control rest and Reiki treatment had a favourable effect on heart rate variability, but the effect of Reikitreatment was markedly stronger. Expand

TLDR
The effects of Reiki on heart rate, diastolic and systolic blood pressure, body temperature, and stress levels were explored in an effort to understand the underlying physiological mechanisms of how Reiki may be having therapeutic effects on subjective measures of stress, pain, relaxation, and depression/anxiety. Expand
Immediate Effects of Reiki on Heart Rate Variability, Cortisol Levels, and Body Temperature in Health Care Professionals With Burnout
TLDR
Reiki has an effect on the parasympathetic nervous system when applied to health care professionals with BS, and SDNN and body temperature were significantly higher after the Reiki treatment than after the placebo. Expand
Reiki improves heart rate homeostasis in laboratory rats.
TLDR
Reiki is effective in modulating HR in stressed and unstressed rats, supporting its use as a stress-reducer in humans. Expand
Physiological changes in energy healers during self-practice.
TLDR
Neither Reconnective Healers nor Reiki practitioners appear to enter a more physiologically relaxed state during self-practice although there is a local peripheral vasodilatation that is probably mediated by humoral agents. Expand
Physiologic Effect of Relaxation Therapies on Autonomic Tone Early After Acute Coronary Syndromes
TLDR
In conclusion, post-MI recipients of light-touch from nurses trained in Reiki experienced increased vagal activity and decreased anxiety, and whether longer-term use of this therapy can improve outcomes requires further study. Expand
Carmen Professionals With Burnout Immediate Effects of Reiki on Heart Rate Variability , Cortisol Levels , and Body Temperature in Health Care
Burnout is a work-related mental health impairment comprising three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Reiki aims to help replenish andExpand
A Large-Scale Effectiveness Trial of Reiki for Physical and Psychological Health.
TLDR
The results from this large-scale multisite effectiveness trial suggest that a single session of Reiki improves multiple variables related to physical and psychological health. Expand
A Randomised Controlled Single-Blind Trial of the Efficacy of Reiki at Benefitting Mood and Well-Being
TLDR
The participants with high anxiety and/or depression who received Reiki showed a progressive improvement in overall mood, which was significantly better at five-week follow-up, while no change was seen in the controls. Expand
The effects of musical tempo and non-invasive neuromodulation on autonomic control of the heart
TLDR
The effects of musical tempo manipulations on cardiovascular autonomic function and subjective responses are investigated and suggest that music and wearables may be susceptible to placebo effects. Expand

TLDR
It was concluded that vagal tone could be selectively measured in an intact person using these simplified and fast algorithms for quantifying respiratory sinus arrhythmia or beat-to-beat variation. Expand

Findings show that the NeuroScope can provide a specific real-time index of cardiac vagal tone in dogs without need for recourse to atropine. Expand
A study to test the effectiveness of placebo Reiki standardization procedures developed for a planned Reiki efficacy study.
TLDR
It was concluded that it is safe to go ahead and conduct the planned randomized 3-arm Reiki efficacy clinical trial, and it is recommended that scholars interested in Reiki research could incorporate the developed standardization procedures to strengthen their designs by adding a placebo arm. Impaired sympathetic vascular regulation in humans after acute dynamic exercise.
TLDR
The vasodilation which underlies post‐exercise hypotension results from both neural and vascular phenomena, and both baroreflex control of sympathetic outflow and the transduction of sympathetic activity into vascular resistance are altered after dynamic exercise. Expand

Subjects who received TT reported significantly greater reduction in pain on the McGill Pain Questionnaire Pain Rating Index and Number of Words Chosen and greater Reduction in anxiety on the Visual Analogue Scale for Anxiety than did those who received sham TT. Expand
