The sympathetic-parasympathetic balance may be altered in critically ill patients. Assessment of autonomic function provides information concerning prognosis, pathogenesis, and treatment strategies in ICU-relevant disorders. Proven tools are heart rate variability, baroreflex sensitivity, and, with limitations, cardiac chemoreflex sensitivity.
