Automated entry system for Chinese printed documents

Abstract

Chinese document entry is a very challenging, yet important task towards the paperless office automation environment. Because of the logographic writing styles of Chinese characters, keyboard-based Chinese character entry systems are limited by their speed, and require special training. Instead, onor off-line direct entry systems, such as pen-based on-line character entry systems or scanned document recognition systems, seem to provide a more promising method for automatic Chinese document entry. The logographic nature of Chinese characters also presents specific challenges for the task of optical Chinese character recognition (OCCR). There are thousands of different Chinese characters, each of which needs to be recognized separately.
