We study, for the first time, automated inference on criminality based solely on still face images, which is free of any biases of subjective judgments of human observers. [...] Key Result In other words, the faces of general law-biding public have a greater degree of resemblance compared with the faces of criminals, or criminals have a higher degree of dissimilarity in facial appearance than non-criminals.Expand
Criminal tendency detection from facial images and the gender bias effect
TLDR
This work explores a new level of image understanding, inferring criminal tendency from facial images via deep learning, using a standard feedforward neural network and a convolutional neural network to discriminate criminal and non-criminal facial images. Expand
The face of crime: Apparent happiness differentiates criminal and non-criminal photos
ABSTRACT In two studies we tested the hypothesis that observers can accurately distinguish between convicted criminals and matched controls, merely by scrutinizing facial photographs. Based on theExpand
Who’s That girl? Facial Appearance Based Inferences
People automatically make inferences from other’s appearance, and there is evidence that personality judgements have substantial accuracy for some traits, such as trustworthiness. However,Expand
A Replication Study: Machine Learning Models Are Capable of Predicting Sexual Orientation From Facial Images
TLDR
While demonstrating that dating profile images carry rich information about sexual orientation these results leave open the question of how much is determined by facial morphology and how much by differences in grooming, presentation and lifestyle. Expand
Deep learning for universal emotion recognition in still images
TLDR
This work proposes a methodology for still image facial expression that contains a face detection and alignment module followed by a deep convolutional neural network that outputs a seven emotions probability vector and explains the fine-tuning key points and insists in overfitting avoidance methods. Expand
An investigation into Bias in Facial Recognition using Learning Algorithms
TLDR
This research project involved the investigation of the potential to apply artificial intelligence as a discriminator of criminal tendencies in people and creating a model that attempts to classify criminals and non criminal images. Expand
Automated Inference on Sociopsychological Impressions of Attractive Female Faces
TLDR
This article presents a case study of automated statistical inference on sociopsychological perceptions of female faces controlled for race, attractiveness, age and nationality, and suggests the possibility of training machine learning algorithms to predict perceptions of personality traits and demeanors. Expand
Facial Recognition: A cross-national Survey on Public Acceptance, Privacy, and Discrimination
TLDR
This study provides insights about the opinion towards FRT from China, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States, which can serve as input for policy makers and legal regulators. Expand
2.5D Facial Personality Prediction Based on Deep Learning
+e assessment of personality traits is now a key part of many important social activities, such as job hunting, accident prevention in transportation, disease treatment, policing, and interpersonalExpand
How We've Taught Algorithms to See Identity: Constructing Race and Gender in Image Databases for Facial Analysis
TLDR
It is found that the majority of image databases rarely contain underlying source material for how race and gender identities are defined and annotated, and that the lack of critical engagement with this nature renders databases opaque and less trustworthy. Expand

The accuracy of inferences about criminality based on facial appearance.
A growing body of evidence suggests that rapid, yet accurate, dispositional inferences can be made after minimal exposure to the physical appearance of others. In this study, we explore the accuracyExpand
CLASSIFYING FACES BY RACE : THE STRUCTURE OF FACE CATEGORIES
This article explored the finding that cross-race (CR) faces are more quickly classified by race than same race (SR) faces. T. Valentine and M. Endo (1992) modeled this effect by assuming that faceExpand
Face Recognition with Local Binary Patterns
This report is about a bachelor assignment in which research has been done to face recognition with Local Binary Patterns (LBP). LBP is a very powerful method to describe the texture and shape of aExpand
Surpassing Human-Level Face Verification Performance on LFW with GaussianFace
TLDR
A principled multi-task learning approach based on Discriminative Gaussian Process Latent Variable Model (DGPLVM), named GaussianFace, for face verification, which achieved an impressive accuracy rate and introduced a more efficient equivalent form of Kernel Fisher Discriminant Analysis to DGPLVM. Predicting political elections from rapid and unreflective face judgments
Here we show that rapid judgments of competence based solely on the facial appearance of candidates predicted the outcomes of gubernatorial elections, the most important elections in the UnitedExpand
Eigenfaces for Recognition
TLDR
A near-real-time computer system that can locate and track a subject's head, and then recognize the person by comparing characteristics of the face to those of known individuals, and that is easy to implement using a neural network architecture. Expand
Is the face a window to the soul? Investigation of the accuracy of intuitive judgments of the trustworthiness of human faces.
Although trustworthiness judgments based on a stranger's face occur rapidly (Willis & Todorov, 2006), their accuracy is unknown. We examined the accuracy of trustworthiness judgments of the faces ofExpand
Perceived Intelligence Is Associated with Measured Intelligence in Men but Not Women
TLDR
These results suggest that a perceiver can accurately gauge the real intelligence of men, but not women, by viewing their faces in photographs; however, this estimation is possibly not based on facial shape. Expand
Do They All Look the Same? Deciphering Chinese, Japanese and Koreans by Fine-Grained Deep Learning
TLDR
It is found that Chinese, Japanese and Koreans do exhibit substantial differences in certain features, such as bangs, smiling, and bushy eyebrows, along with several gender-related cross-country patterns as well. Expand
Discriminant analysis of principal components for face recognition
TLDR
A hybrid classifier using PCA and LDA provides a useful framework for other image recognition tasks as well and demonstrates a significant improvement when principal components rather than original images are fed to the LDA classifier. Expand
