Studies on the structure of haemopoiesis in acute myeloblastic leukaemia (AML) has shown the presence of a small population of malignant cells with extensive proliferative and self-renewal properties which are features of stem cells. The requirements of these cells for proliferation have been studied both in clonogenic assays in semi-solid media and in liquid suspension culture.
