Author Impact Factor: tracking the dynamics of individual scientific impact
@article{Pan2014AuthorIF, title={Author Impact Factor: tracking the dynamics of individual scientific impact}, author={Raj Kumar Pan and Santo Fortunato}, journal={Scientific Reports}, year={2014}, volume={4} }
The impact factor (IF) of scientific journals has acquired a major role in the evaluations of the output of scholars, departments and whole institutions. Typically papers appearing in journals with large values of the IF receive a high weight in such evaluations. However, at the end of the day one is interested in assessing the impact of individuals, rather than papers. Here we introduce Author Impact Factor (AIF), which is the extension of the IF to authors. The AIF of an author A in year t is…

Scientific impact of an author and role of self-citations
- Computer ScienceScientometrics

The results show that self-citations, if totally removed from total received citations, negatively influence the AIF and H-Index values and hence can be used to artificially boost the scientific impact.

Results show that there is a low correlation of these indices with h-index, and in identifying exceptional performers of a field these indices perform better than h- index.
Measuring the impact of scholarly journals in the humanities field
- EconomicsScientometrics
- 2015
The ‘selectivity of journals in their choice of papers for publication’, and the ‘journal diffusion’ are sensitive and useful indicators, which can be used in conjunction with the classical impact indicators already available in order to evaluate the role of the journals.

This article describes a new bibliometric indicator called Impact Factor of a Term (IFT) that helps to predict future impact of scientific works and/or the author. The predictive properties of IFT…
A skeptical view on the Hirsch index and its predictive power
- EconomicsPhysica Scripta
- 2018
The h-index was proposed by Hirsch in 2005. It is now often used as a measure of scientific performance of individual researchers. Assuming that it has predictive power, the index is even considered…
Suitability of h- and x-indices for evaluating authors’ individual research achievements in a given short period of years
- MedicineMedicine
- 2021
The h-index demonstrated that it had the least relation to other metrics and failed to differentiate authors’ IRAs among groups, particularly in a short time period, while the x-index combined with the Kano map is recommended in research for a better understanding of the authors' IRAs in other journals or disciplines.
Impact, impact, impact
- MedicineJournal of hip preservation surgery
- 2018
The impact factor, that journal metric the authors love to hate, that metric that simply will not go away, should be considered as a surrogate measure of the quality of individual research articles, to assess an individual scientist's contributions, or in hiring, promotion, or funding decisions.

Reputation and impact in academic careers
- BiologyProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
- 2014
An original framework for measuring how a publication’s citation rate depends on the reputation of its central author i, in addition to its net citation count c is developed, which is found to reproduce numerous statistical observations for real careers, thus providing insight into the microscopic mechanisms underlying cumulative advantage in science.
Quantifying Long-Term Scientific Impact

- 2013
A mechanistic model is derived for the citation dynamics of individual papers, allowing us to collapse the citation histories of papers from different journals and disciplines into a single curve, indicating that all papers tend to follow the same universal temporal pattern.
