grown on a synthetic medium. The strain was originally isolated from a fruiting body of Crepidotus sp. collected in the Picea-fovQSt near Radison (Quebec, Canada). Aureobasidium sp. forms smooth colonies with a dark brown colour covered with slimy masses of conidia on malt agar. The mycelium displays vegetative hyphae of approximately 2.5 //m width. The conidiogenous hyphae are often constricted at the septa with up to 5 /im length. The blastoconidia are hyaline, slender cylindrical to

Basidiomycete metabolites attenuate virulence properties of Candida albicans in vitro

Interestingly, these drugs are neither fungistatic nor fungicidal at the concentrations applied, and Laccaridione B may represent a promising novel type of antimycotic drug – targeting virulence factors without killing the yeast.

The results indicated that endophytic mold could be a promising source for antimicrobial agents.

Induction of Apoptosis and Necrosis in Cancer Cells by Electric Fields, Electromagnetic Fields, and Photodynamically Active Quinoids

Using pulsating electromagnetic fields (50 Hz) one is able to cause necrosis itself and this effect is strengthened in the presence of quinoid anthracyclines and actinomycin-C, which will be of advantage for future development as an adjuvant therapy.

Total Synthesis of Hybocarpone, a Cytotoxic Naphthazarin Derivative from the Lichen Lecanora hybocarpa, and Related Compounds

The concise synthesis of the lichen-derived antitumor agent hybocarpone and its analogs is described and it was shown that the first step to tetrahydrofuran features is the bridging hindered S*,S* and R* carbon-carbon bonds of the molecules.

Chemistry of naphthazarin derivatives. 9. Direct observation of prototropic tautomerism of (poly)hydroxynaphthazarins by IR spectroscopy

A series of substituted (poly)hydroxylated naphthazarins (5,8-dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinones) were synthesized. In general, (poly)hydroxynaphthazarins exist in organic aprotic solvents as mixtures of

Quenched BODIPY dye-labeled casein substrates for the assay of protease activity by direct fluorescence measurement.

The BODIPY dye-labeled casein protease assays were able to sensitively detect the activities of a wide variety of enzymes with these new substrates, including serine, acid, sulfhydryl, and metalloproteases.

Phase annealing in SHELX-90: direct methods for larger structures

A number of extensions to the multisolution approach to the crystallographic phase problem are discussed in which the negative quartet relations play an important role. A phase annealing method,
