Motor neurons innervating the dorsal longitudinal muscles of a noctuid moth receive synaptic input activated by auditory stimuli. Each ear of a noctuid moth contains two auditory neurons that are sensitive to ultrasound (Fig. 1). The ears function as bat detectors.
