We propose an auction for online advertising where each ad occupies either one square or two horizontally-adjacent squares of a grid of squares. Our primary application are ads for products shown on retail websites such as Instacart or Amazon where the products are naturally organized into a grid. We propose efficient algorithms for computing the optimal layout of the ads and pricing of the ads. The auction is a generalization of the generalized second-price (GSP) auction used by internet search…

Truthful auctions for pricing search keywords

We present a truthful auction for pricing advertising slots on a web-page assuming that advertisements for different merchants must be ranked in decreasing order of their (weighted) bids. This

Sponsored Search Auctions with Rich Ads

TLDR
This paper reports on efforts to redesign a search ad selling system from the ground up in this new context, proposing a mechanism that optimizes an entire slate of ads globally and computes prices that achieve properties analogous to those held by GSP in the original, simpler setting of uniform ads.

Bidding to the Top: VCG and Equilibria of Position-Based Auctions

TLDR
A simple allocation and pricing mechanism that generalizes the desirable properties of current auctions that do not have position constraints is presented and it is shown that this equilibrium is the best such equilibrium for the advertisers in terms of the profit made by each advertiser.

Privacy protection and advertising in a networked world

TLDR
This thesis presents an auction that is truthful when the advertisers are not budget-constrained, and shows that its revenue is equivalent to the non-truthful auctions currently being used by search engines.

Algorithmic game theory

TLDR
A new era of theoretical computer science addresses fundamental problems about auctions, networks, and human behavior in a bid to solve the challenges of 21st Century finance.

Online Ad Auctions

I describe how search engines sell ad space using an auction. I analyze advertiser behavior in this context using elementary price theory and derive a simple way to estimate the producer surplus
