A growing body of research demonstrates that interpersonal relationships are central and significant to the lives of individuals (Berscheid, 1999; Campbell, Converse, & Rodgers, 1976; Myers & Diener, 1995). Satisfying relationships also have strong links to individuals' mental and physical well being. It is not surprising, then, that social psychologists have been interested in how these relationships are established and maintained and how and why they sometimes end.
