The second messenger cAMP stimulates transcription with burst-attenuation kinetics that mirror the PKA-dependent phosphorylation and subsequent protein phosphatase 1 (PP1)–mediated dephosphorylation of the cAMP responsive element binding protein (CREB) at Ser133.
