}The effect of surgical ablation of ablation of atrioventricular accessory pathways on the incidence of atrial fibrillation in patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome was examined and the results of preoperative electrophysiologic testing were studied to determine factors predictive of outcome. Among 50 consecutive surgical cases, 19 patients were identified with a past history of at least one episode of spontaneous atrial fibrillation documented by electrocardiogram before surgery. The…

Frequent tachycardias seem to promote an electrical remodelling and an increased atrial vulnerability to atrial fibrillation, whereas after successful ablation the majority of patients remain free of atrial Fibrillation.

Because of the possibility of grave hemodynamic derangement induced by marked tachycardia, surgical treatment should be seriously considered in patients with mitral stenosis when associated with WPW syndrome and atrial fibrillation, even in those not classified as high risk patients.

Patients with radiofrequency ablation-treated WPW syndrome have a post-ablation mortality that is similar to the background population, and the risk of atrial fibrillation remains high after radio frequencies ablation for the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
