A predictive model for nanoparticle nucleation has not yet been successfully achieved. Classical nucleation theory fails because the atomistic nature of the seed has to be considered. Indeed, geometrical structure as well as stoichiometry do not always match the bulk values. We present a fully microscopic approach based on a first-principle study of aluminum oxide clusters. We calculated stable structures of AlxOy and their associated thermodynamic properties. From these data, the chemical…

Microcanonical Nucleation Theory for Anisotropic Materials Validated on Alumina Clusters.
TLDR
A general and versatile model using activated complex kinetics with a microcanonical approach that efficiently reproduces experimental size distributions of alumina clusters formed by laser ablation with different buffer gas densities, including magic numbers.
Comparison of aluminum oxide empirical potentials from cluster to nanoparticle
Aluminum oxide nanoparticles are increasingly sought in numerous technological applications. However, as the nanoparticles grow during the synthesis, two phase transitions occur. At the nanoscale,
Immiscibility of Nucleating Aluminum Oxide Nanoparticles in Vapor
Multistep pathways in nucleation are now known to be ubiquitous and thus crucial to understand crystal formation processes. In a supersaturated mother phase, many types of source molecules are
Out-of-Equilibrium Polymorph Selection in Nanoparticle Freezing.
TLDR
These findings address the key challenge in the synthesis of nano-alloys for technological applications, i.e., rationally exploiting the competition between kinetics and thermodynamics by designing a treatment history that forces the system into desirable metastable states.
Free energy calculations along entropic pathways. I. Homogeneous vapor-liquid nucleation for atomic and molecular systems.
TLDR
The results show that the μVT-S method gives the correct dependence on supersaturation of the height of the free energy barrier and of the size of the critical droplet, when compared to predictions from the classical nucleation theory and to previous simulation results.
Formation Mechanism of Laser‐Synthesized Iron–Manganese Alloy Nanoparticles, Manganese Oxide Nanosheets and Nanofibers
Laser ablation in liquids (LAL) has emerged as a versatile approach for the synthesis of alloy particles and oxide nanomaterials. However, complex chemical reactions often take place during synthesis
Two-Step Process in Homogeneous Nucleation of Alumina in Supersaturated Vapor
Multiple pathways in crystal nucleation are now known to be more common than previously predicted; it is, therefore, crucial to understand the early stages of crystallization. Even in relatively

Homogeneous nucleation rates for n‐pentanol in argon: Determination of the critical cluster size
We have measured homogeneous nucleation rates of n‐pentanol droplets in argon using the nucleation pulse chamber recently described. The nucleation rates J were measured as functions of activity a at
Classical nucleation theory from a dynamical approach to nucleation.
TLDR
It is shown that diffusion-limited classical nucleation theory (CNT) can be recovered as a simple limit of the recently proposed dynamical theory of nucleation based on fluctuating hydrodynamics and gives corrections to the nucleation rate even for the case of small supersaturations due to changes in the monomer distribution function and to the excess free energy.
Surface Energies and Thermodynamic Phase Stability in Nanocrystalline Aluminas
Corundum, α-Al 2 O 3 , is the thermodynamically stable phase of coarsely crystalline aluminum oxide, but syntheses of nanocrystalline Al 2 O 3 usually result in γ-Al 2 O 3 . Adsorption
Simulations of the nucleation of AgBr from solution

γ-Al2O3 nanoparticles synthesised by pulsed laser ablation in liquids: a plasma analysis.
TLDR
It is found that starting from a hot atomized gas, the nucleation cannot occur in the first microseconds, and the question of the influence of water on the control of the stoichiometry is raised.
