The atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial joints are susceptible to arthritis and can be injured during acceleration/deceleration (“whiplash”) injuries. Patients often report neck pain and “stiffness” and demonstrate decreased cervical range of motion in all three planes for flexion, extension, and lateral rotation.
