Atherinella blackburni is a silverside species whose occurrence on the Brazilian coast was not properly registered until recently. So far, records of its distribution along the Brazilian shore were limited to Itaparica Island, Bahia State, and Porto Inhaúma, Rio de Janeiro State. In a recent survey of the ichthyofauna of Itamambuca Beach, Ubatuba, São Paulo State, 100 specimens of this species were collected, yielding a considerable source of information regarding its ecology and a new southern… Expand
Genetic structuring among silverside fish (Atherinella brasiliensis) populations from different Brazilian regions
To adequately manage and maintain the genetic variability of silversides in Brazilian estuaries, it is proposed three distinct management units for this species: 1) Itaparica; 2) Carapebus; and 3) Southern Brazil. Expand
Feeding ecology of the beach silverside Atherinella blackburni (Atherinopsidae) in a tropical sandy beach, Southeastern Brazil
The feeding ecology of the beach silverside (Atherinella blackburni) in the surf zone of a tropical sand beach, located in the southeastern Brazil, was accessed through the gut content analysis of 198 fish to understand how factors such as fish's size, season and day period affect the diet composition of the species. Expand
Marcada diferenciação cariotípica entre as "manjubas" Atherinella blackburni e A. brasiliensis (Atheriniformes).
The striking structural chromosomal diversity between the species was apparently mediated by pericentric inversions and differential heterochromatinization process. Expand
Shifts in the abundance and distribution of shallow water fish fauna on the southeastern Brazilian coast: a response to climate change
The temperature in the South Atlantic underwent an increase from 1948 to 2016, and the Brazilian coast is very likely suffering from climate change. We examined temporal shifts in the abundance ofExpand
Ecological aspects of the surf-zone ichthyofauna of Itamambuca Beach, Ubatuba, SP
Foi realizado levantamento ictiologico da zona de arrebentacao da praia de Itamambuca, Ubatuba, Sao Paulo, com o intuito de se avaliar a composicao, estrutura e dinâmica da fauna de peixes atraves de descritores da comunidade. Expand
Length–weight relationships for juvenile and small-sized adult fishes of the surf zone
Length–weight relationships for 16 species captured in the surf zone of six sandy beaches near the mouth of the estuarine system of the Piraque-acu and Piraques-mirim rivers, southeastern Brazil are provided. Expand

Variações temporais e espaciais na composição e estrutura da comunidade de peixes jovens da Baía de Sepetiba, Rio de Janeiro
The high number of fish species in this area, suggest the important role played by the Sepetiba Bay in the fish community to where many species probably migrate from the nearby sea and stay in the Bay during part of their life cycle. Expand

The purpose of this paper is to review the present state of the systematics (taxonomy, relationships and distribution) of the South American silversides in the context of phylogenetic revisions of AtherIniformes and Atherinopsinae. Expand
Registro de Atherinella blackburni (Schultz) (Actinopterygii, Teleostei, Atherinopsidae) na praia de Ponta da Ilha, Ilha de Itaparica, Bahia, Brasil
This study records A. blackburni in Bahia littoral and presents more informations about its intraespecific variation. Expand
Spatial, temporal and diel variations of fish assemblages at two sandy beaches in the Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Overall, temporal fluctuations act more at a specific level than at a structural one, and may be linked to some particular stages of the fish life cycle, but do not significantly influence the spatial organization. Expand
Diel and seasonal changes in the distribution of fish on a southeast Brazil sandy beach
The winter/spring inshore/offshore movements at diel scale performed by the three most abundant species demonstrate that diel fluctuation acts more at a species-specific level than at a structural one; in summer there was no evidence of diel movements due to a heavy influx of G. rhombeus, which use the area throughout day and night, increasing overall abundance. Phylogenetic relationships among atheriniform fishes (Teleostei: Atherinomorpha)
Bedotia, Rheocles, and melanotaeniines are shown to be derived within atheriniforms rather than the plesiomorphic sister groups to a paraphyletic ‘atherinoid’ group. Expand

It is argued that most fish species have a circadian system but that havingsuch a system does not necessarily imply strict diurnalism or nocturnalism, and that Rigidity ofactivity phase seems more common in species that display behavioral sleep. Expand
