Abstract In this paper we consider external current QED in the Coulomb gauge and in axial gauges for various spatial directions of the axis. For a non-zero electric charge of the current, we demonstrate that any two different gauges from this class correspond to quantum theories which are not unitarily equivalent. We show that the spacelike asymptotic flux of the electromagnetic field is the underlying superselected quantity. We also express the large gauge transformation linking two…

Curing Velocity Superselection in Non-relativistic QED by Restriction to a Lightcone
It is physically expected that plane-wave configurations of the electron in QED induce disjoint representations of the algebra of the electromagnetic fields. This phenomenon of velocity
Symplectic reduction of Yang-Mills theory with boundaries: from superselection sectors to edge modes, and back
I develop a theory of symplectic reduction that applies to bounded regions in Yang-Mills theory and electromagnetism. In this theory superselection sectors for the electric-flux play a central role.
Gauss’ Law and string-localized quantum field theory
A bstractThe quantum Gauss Law as an interacting field equation is a prominent feature of QED with eminent impact on its algebraic and superselection structure. It forces charged particles to be
Infraparticle quantum fields and the formation of photon clouds
Abstract A non-perturbative and exactly solvable quantum field theoretical model for a “dressed Dirac field” is presented, that exhibits all the kinematical features of QED: an appropriate
Asymptotic symmetries in the BV-BFV formalism. (English)
  • Mathematics
  • 2022
A classical field theory on a manifold with boundary phrased in the BV-BFV formalism is described by two sets of data, one assigned to the bulk manifold and one to the boundary, together with an
Infrared Problem vs Gauge Choice: Scattering of Classical Dirac Field
We consider the Dirac equation for the classical spinor field placed in an external, time-dependent electromagnetic field of the form typical for scattering settings:

Asymptotic Symmetries in the BV-BFV Formalism
We show how to derive asymptotic charges for field theories on manifolds with “asymptotic” boundary, using the BV-BFV formalism. We also prove that the conservation of said charges follows naturally

Verification on Equivalence of the Axial Gauge to the Coulomb Gauge in QED by Embedding in the Indefinite Metric Hilbert Space
Gauge Equivalence of the Aa=O (axial) gauge to the Coulomb gauge is directly verified in QED. For that purpose a pair of conjugate zero-norm fields are introduced. This enables us to construct a
Large gauge symmetries and asymptotic states in QED
A bstractLarge Gauge Transformations (LGT) are gauge transformations that do not vanish at infinity. Instead, they asymptotically approach arbitrary functions on the conformal sphere at infinity.
Quantum gauge equivalence in QED
We discuss gauge transformations in QED coupled to a charged spinor field, and examine whether we can gauge-transform the entire formulation of the theory from one gauge to another, so that not only
On string-localized potentials and gauge fields
A recent idea, put forward by Mund, Rehren and Schroer, is discussed; it suggests that in gauge quantum field theory one can replace the point-localized gauge fields by string-localized vector
New symmetries of massless QED
A bstractAn infinite number of physically nontrivial symmetries are found for abelian gauge theories with massless charged particles. They are generated by large U(1) gauge transformations that
Asymptotic U(1) charges at spatial infinity
A bstractLarge gauge symmetries in Minkowski spacetime are often studied in two distinct regimes: either at asymptotic (past or future) times or at spatial infinity. By working in harmonic gauge, we
Asymptotic symmetries of QED and Weinberg’s soft photon theorem
A bstractVarious equivalences between so-called soft theorems which constrain scattering amplitudes and Ward identities related to asymptotic symmetries have recently been established in gauge

String-Localized Quantum Fields and Modular Localization
We study free, covariant, quantum (Bose) fields that are associated with irreducible representations of the Poincaré group and localized in semi-infinite strings extending to spacelike infinity.
The physical state space of quantum electrodynamics
Starting from the fact that electrically charged particles are massive, we derive a criterion which characterizes the state space of quantum electrodynamics. This criterion clarifies the special role
