BACKGROUND Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is secreted by adipocytes and by the liver and modulates insulin sensitivity in animal models. However, controversial data exist regarding the association of serum levels of RBP4 with insulin resistance in humans. Obesity confers a major risk to develop insulin resistance.
