  • Cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (PDEs) hydrolyze the intracellular second messengers cAMP and cGMP to their corresponding monophosphates. PDEs play an important role in signal transduction by regulating the intracellular concentration of cyclic nucleotides.
