Background/Aims: It has been suggested that monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) activity is involved in the pathogenesis of major depression. Bereavement-related complicated grief significantly increases the risk of major depression and has been shown to be influenced by serotonergic tonus, possibly conferred by MAO-A activity. Complicated grief – whose inclusion in DSM-V as a separate mental disorder is under discussion – has been shown to be a distinct syndrome with symptoms not seen in depression… Expand

TLDR
A gene–environment interaction effect of an OXTR gene variant with BI and possibly also symptoms of adult SA in the moderation of vulnerability for CG is suggested for the first time. Expand
Pharmacoepigenetics of depression: no major influence of MAO-A DNA methylation on treatment response
TLDR
The present pilot data do not suggest a major influence of MAO-A DNA methylation on antidepressant treatment response, however, the presently observed trend towards CpG-specific MAo-A gene hypomethylation—possibly via increased gene expression and consecutively decreased serotonin and/or norepinephrine availability—to potentially drive impaired antidepressants treatment response in female patients might be worthwhile to be followed up in larger pharmacoepigenetic studies. Expand
Association Analysis of Maoa and Slc6a4 Gene Variation in South East European War Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.
TLDR
The notion that MAOA VNTR gene variation modulates development and recovery of posttraumatic stress disorder in a war traumatised population is supported, but did not support a connection between SLC6A4 gene variations and war related PTSD. Expand
Negative emotionality: monoamine oxidase B gene variants modulate personality traits in healthy humans
TLDR
This finding provides the first evidence that MAOB polymorphisms influence levels of negative emotionality in healthy human volunteers, and could lead to a better understanding of personality traits and inter-individual susceptibility developing psychiatric disorders such as major depression. Expand
Biological determinants of depression following bereavement
TLDR
Longitudinal studies that include data collection prior to, and also after, bereavement and which chart both biological and psychological measures are needed to develop profiles for the prediction of response to Bereavement and personalised interventions. Expand
Gender-Specific Association between the COMT Val158Met Polymorphism and Openness to Experience in Panic Disorder Patients
TLDR
The gender-specific effect of theCOMT genotype suggests that the COMT Val/Met genotype may influence a personality trait, openness to experience, in males with panic disorder. Expand
Child maltreatment moderates the association of MAOA with symptoms of depression and antisocial personality disorder.
TLDR
It is concluded that the Gene x Environment interplay at this locus (MAOA) contributes to both symptoms of ASPD and MD and that careful specification of child maltreatment may be essential if genetic association research is to produce replicable results. Expand
Association between monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) and personality traits in Japanese individuals
TLDR
The authors' results suggest a gender-specific contribution of MAOA-VNTR polymorphism to persistence scores, and suggest the association between personality traits and the central nervous system remains unclear. Expand
Depression and the role of genes involved in dopamine metabolism and signalling
TLDR
Genes for crucial steps in dopamine neurotransmission: synthesis, signalling and inactivation are discussed, suggesting that genotyping is a promising field for research into the development of MDD. Expand
Pharmacological approaches to the treatment of complicated grief: rationale and a brief review of the literature
TLDR
There is a need for randomized trials to test the potential efficacy of pharmacological agents in the treatment of CG, as three open-label trials and one randomized trial on bereavement-related depression suggest that tricyclic antidepressants may be effective, although they may be more efficacious for depressive symptoms than for grief-specific symptoms. Association Study of a Monoamine Oxidase A Gene Promoter Polymorphism with Major Depressive Disorder and Antidepressant Response
TLDR
The findings suggest that the MAOA-uVNTR may be involved in the pathogenesis of MDD and the antidepressant therapeutic mechanisms in Chinese population, and that there may be a gender effect in this association. Expand
Association between a functional polymorphism in the monoamine oxidase A gene promoter and major depressive disorder.
TLDR
It is suggested that an excess of high-activity MAO-A gene promoter alleles resulting in an elevated MAo-A activity is a risk factor for major depressive disorder in females. Expand
Comorbidity of axis I disorders in patients with traumatic grief.
TLDR
Comorbid major depressive disorder and PTSD may be prevalent in patients presenting for treatment of traumatic grief, and ICG scores and functional impairment were higher among patients with more than one concurrent Axis I diagnosis. Expand
Temperament and Character in Mood Disorders: Influence of DRD4, SERTPR, TPH and MAO-A Polymorphisms
TLDR
The observation of a pattern of influence on temperamental dimension exerted by serotonergic and dopaminergic genes suggests that the contribution of these polymorphisms to the clinical presentation of mood disorders could be mediated by an influence on personality differences. Expand
A case for establishing complicated grief as a distinct mental disorder in DSM-V.
TLDR
It is argued that the establishment of CG as a diagnostic entity is essential because its symptoms are associated with enduring mental and physical health morbidity and require specifically designed clinical interventions. Expand

TLDR
The associations with the MAOA and serotonin transporter loci are consistent with previous data suggesting associations with susceptibility to bipolar affective disorder and type 1 errors are possible. Expand

TLDR
It is concluded that elevated MAO-A density is the primary monoamine-lowering process during major depression. Expand

Excess of high activity monoamine oxidase A gene promoter alleles in female patients with panic disorder.
TLDR
It is suggested that increased monoamine oxidase A activity is a risk factor for panic disorder in female patients because the longer alleles (3a, 4 and 5) were more active than allele 3. Expand
A functional polymorphism in the promoter region of monoamine oxidase-A gene and mood disorders
TLDR
It is suggested that the functional VNTR polymorphism in the MAOA gene is unlikely to play a major role in the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder or unipolar depression, and no association between the polymorphism and a history of suicide attempt is found. Expand
