In infants, apneas can be centrally mediated, obstructive or both and have been proposed to be gastroesophageal reflux (GER) induced. Evidence for this possible association has never been systematically reviewed.
Cardiorespiratory events in infants with gastroesophageal reflux symptoms: Is there any association?

TLDR
Evaluated the relationships between CR and GER events in infants admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, leading to over‐prescription of drugs and delayed discharge.
Etiologies of apnea of infancy
To date there are limited data in the literature to guide the initial evaluation for etiologies of apnea in full‐term infants born at greater than or equal to 37 weeks conceptional age (apnea of

GOR(D) and Apnoea
TLDR
Empirical treatment for GOR is not recommended due to lack of evidence of efficacy and possible pharmacologically related adverse events, so oesophageal impedance with simultaneous polysomnography can better demonstrate the temporal association in selected patients but should be reserved to severe or recurrent otherwise unexplained respiratory events.
Widespread use of gastric acid inhibitors in infants: Are they needed? Are they safe?
TLDR
Previously assumed safety of these medications is being challenged with evidence of potential side effects including GI and respiratory infections, bacterial overgrowth, adverse bone health, food allergy and drug interactions.
Apnea in the term infant.
Combined therapy in gastro-esophageal reflux disease of term neonates resistant to conservative therapy and monotherapy: a clinical trial
TLDR
Combination of each acid suppressant with metoclopramide led to higher response rate in comparison with monotherapy used before intervention, but it was significantly higher in group A (> 90%).
Gastroesophageal reflux related to respiratory inhibition after crying and feeding hypoxemia in infants

The journal of maternal-fetal & neonatal medicine : the official journal of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine, the Federation of Asia and Oceania Perinatal Societies, the International Society of Perinatal Obstetricians
  • 2016
TLDR
In the infants with RIAC and feeding Hypoxemia, some show severe hypoxemia and bradycardia caused by GER, and medical staff caring for infants should note the presence of RIACand feeding hypoxemic.

TLDR
Medical staff caring for infants should note the presence of RIAC, feeding hypoxemia, and RIGER, which are significantly associated with each other.

Infant apnea and gastroesophageal reflux: A critical review and framework for further investigation
TLDR
The evidence for and against an association between gastroesophageal reflux and apnea is presented, techniques used in their evaluation are discussed, and approaches for future investigation are identified.
Does Gastroesophageal Reflux Cause Apnea in Preterm Infants?
TLDR
There is no evidence to support widespread use of anti-reflux medications in the treatment of apnea in preterm infants, and further studies are needed to clarify the existence of a small subpopulation of infants who may have GER-induced apnea.
Cisapride Decreases Gastroesophageal Reflux in Preterm Infants
TLDR
Overall, cisapride treatment significantly improved the RI from 16.6 ± 15.2 to 9.1 ± 8.4 SD, and the number of reflux episodes ≥5 minutes was reduced from 7.3 ± 4.8 to 4.0.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Causing Sleep Interruptions in Infants
TLDR
GER was a frequent cause of interrupting sleep among infant patients, and NAGER proved to be equally important as AGER for causing arousals and awakenings in infants.
Gastroesophageal reflux and apnea in prematurely born infants during wakefulness and sleep.
TLDR
No relationship could be demonstrated between the occurrence of gastroesophageal reflux and that of apneas, but more occurred during wakefulness and during active sleep than during quiet sleep.
A Thickened Formula Does Not Reduce Apneas Related to Gastroesophageal Reflux in Preterm Infants
TLDR
A starch-thickened preterm formula did not reduce the number of AOP or GER-related apneas, but it reduced acid GER features but had no effect on non-acid GER indexes.
The binomial symptom index: toward an optimal method for the evaluation of symptom association in gastroesophageal reflux
TLDR
An optimal method for the evaluation of symptom association, the binomial symptom index (BSI), is provided for gastroesophageal reflux disease.
