The hedgehog (hh) gene family encodes signaling molecules that play an important role in regulating morphogenesis. There are three known mammalian homologues of hh (Echelard et al., 1993). Of these, the mouse desert hedgehog gene (Dhh) was mapped to the most distal region of mouse chromosome 15 by interspecific backcross analysis (Marigo et al., 1995).
