Members of the scavenger receptor cysteine rich superfamily are typically expressed on cells associated with the immune system (Resnick et al., 1994). However, proteins containing scavenger receptor cysteine rich (SRCR) domains were also shown to be synthesized by other cells such as epithelial cells in the gastrointestinal channel (Cheng et al., 1996; Holmskov et al., 1999) and hepatocytes (Goldberger et al., 1987).
