Critical habitats such as nesting areas and overwintering sites are specific areas used by organisms to carry out important life functions. In many urbanized centers, critical habitats of at-risk species have often become degraded and/or fragmented because of human activities. These findings support the hypothesis that road mortality has contributed to the dramatic decline in the snapping turtle population in Cootes Paradise Marsh, which is in jeopardy of extirpation and exclusion fencing must be installed for an extended distance along both sides of surrounding roads to prevent turtles from crossing the road and to promote their use of existing aquatic culverts.
