Assessment of Plasma Protein S FunctioRal Activity and Patients with Liver Cirrhosis

Abstract

Protein S functional activity, free an(l total protein S antigen as well as C4b binding protein antigen were assayed in })atients with liver cirrhosis 2ind the an]otints of {'ree proteiil S ancl protein S bound to C4b binding protein in normal subjects ancl in patients with Eiver cirrhosis were also calculated froni the area of two-dimensional immunoeEectrophoresis. Cholinesterase activity correlated well with total pretein S, C4b bindiRg protein and pr()tein S bouncl to C4b l)indir)g protein but not with the ftmctional activity of pro{ein S nor with free protein S antigei}. The ratio of free protein S to protein S beund to C4b binding pi'otein was 68±39t, in normaE subjects and 127±69% in patients with liver cirrhosis. C4b binding protein hacl an inverse correlation with tlae ratio of free proteii/i S to proteiil S bound to C`il) binding protein. I?roi/n these clata, we can conclude that protein S bound to C4b binding protein btit not free prot,ein S reflects the level of }iver ftmction of macromolecular synthesis in liver cirrhosis and that the binding condition between C4b binding protein and protein S in patien{s with liver cirrhosis is different from thatin normal subjects.
