Severe, non-fatal, burn injuries cause pain as well as emotional and physical scarring. The main aim of treatment is to restore form, function and feeling to burn-injured skin and to enable physical and psychological recovery. This article provides an overview of the immediate assessment required when a child with burns arrives in the emergency department and discusses the challenges of emergency management.
