Biological nutrient removal (BNR) plants can reduce both carbon and oxygen requirements by increasing the fraction of phosphorus (P) removed by denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAOs). Contrasting findings have been reported in literature concerning whether or not PAOs and DPAOs are different microorganisms.
