The single-question self-classification Stages of Change scales (SAS) for two modes of physical activity were compared with parallel staging methods. In Study 1, the participants (N = 50) completed SAS in a questionnaire and were then personally interviewed on their physical activity. In four fifths of the cases, SAS indicated the same stage as the interviewer's judgment. In Study 2, a representative survey sample (N = 600) completed both SAS and, in another questionnaire, a three-question…

The Stages of Change in three stage concepts and two modes of physical activity: a comparison of stage distributions and practical implications.
TLDR
Results show that an individual can be in different Stages of Change depending on the stage definition and be regularly active or notDepending on the target behavior, and differences in the pros for change between the new stages of the seven-stage concept.
Validity of the Stages of Change in Steps instrument (SoC-Step) for achieving the physical activity goal of 10,000 steps per day
TLDR
This brief SoC-Step instrument appears to have good criterion-related validity for determining Stages of Change related to the public health goal of 10,000 steps per day.
Comparison of the Stages of Change for Physical Activity and Physical Exercise in Brazilian and Catalan University Students
The transtheoretical model has been used in the field of physical activity and physical exercise especially with their stage of change questionnaire instrument. Few investigations take place into the
A critical review of the validity of measuring stages of change in relation to exercise and moderate physical activity
Many professionals are integrally involved in the promotion of exercise and physical activity, for specific therapeutic purposes, and with the aim of improving population health and quality of life.
Descriptive analysis of Iranian adolescents' stages of change for physical activity behavior.
TLDR
The distribution observed across the stages of change supports the need to improve the physical activity of Iranian youth, especially among girls, and suggests interventions will need to be tailored to the sex of the participants, as well as their specific stage of readiness to change.
Assessment of Physical Activity (PA) Readiness and Participation among Staff in Nigerian Universities
Inactivity and sedentary living are on the increase globally. Readiness to begin, continue and sustain PA (physical activity) behaviour plays key roles in attaining desirable health outcome.
The Transtheoretical Model and stages of change: a critique: observations by five commentators on the paper by Adams, J. and White, M. (2004) why don't stage-based activity promotion interventions work?
TLDR
Six equally distinguished commentators provided a critical review of the Transtheoretical Model in this edition of the Journal.
GPs' assessment of patients' readiness to change diet, activity and smoking.
TLDR
Low accuracy of the assessment of patients' readiness to change fat consumption, physical activity, and smoking by GPs and general practice registrars indicates that counselling in general practice is often targeted at the wrong people at thewrong time.
Parks and Health: Differences in Constraints and Negotiation Strategies for Park-Based Leisure Time Physical Activity by Stage of Change.
TLDR
This study supports research which indicates the adoption and maintenance of physical activity are influenced by different individual, social and environmental factors, and expands the research base by examining constraints and negotiation at different physical activity stages in a park setting.
Adoption and maintenance of physical activity amongst Australian adolescents : implications for schooling and learning
Whilst regular physical activity is commonly associated with numerous physical health benefits, the literature suggests that physical activity may also have favourable effects on academic

Stages of change in two modes of health-enhancing physical activity: methodological aspects and promotional implications.
TLDR
The results show that, at a given time, a person can be in different stages in different modes of HEPA, and the behavior of interest must be specified before accurate information on the stages of change in a population can be obtained.
Assessing the reliability of a stage of change scale.
TLDR
It is recommended that research be undertaken to devise more reliable scales for stages of change for the various health behaviours, and it is noted that the attitude literature with respect to context and time specific intentions could be helpful in devising such scales.
Regular Exercise in 30- to 60-Year-Old Men: Combining The Stages-of-Change Model and The Theory of Planned Behavior to Identify Determinants for Targeting Heart Health Interventions
TLDR
By identifying the specific needs of sub-groups, the results can help define programs most likely to accelerate men to the stage of regular exercise, part of an effective strategy for heart health promotion in this high-risk population.
A critical examination of the application of the Transtheoretical Model's stages of change to dietary behaviours.
TLDR
The application of the Transtheoretical Model's stages of change to dietary behaviours may be fundamentally problematic due to the difference in nature between dietary behaviours and the addictive behaviours upon which the model was originally based.

TLDR
Path analysis indicated that intention, attitude, and perceived control had direct relationships with stage of readiness, and discrimination among the stages by the selected variables was successful.
Self-efficacy and the stages of exercise behavior change.
TLDR
Two scales to measure stages of change for exercise behavior and exercise self-efficacy indicated employees who had not yet begun to exercise, in contrast with those who exercised regularly, had little confidence in their ability to exercise.
Health enhancing physical activity as perceived in interviews based on the theory of planned behaviour
Abstract The perception of behaviours from two categories of health enhancing physical activity (HEPA): outdoor aerobic exercise (OAE) and everyday commuting activity (ECA) was examined in a sample
Motivational Readiness, self-efficacy and decision-making for exercise
Exercise has important health benefits, but a large proportion of the population is physically inactive. We examined the prevalence of stages of readiness to exercise and their relationship to
The Transtheoretical Model of Health Behavior Change
TLDR
If results with stage-matched interventions continue to be replicated, health promotion programs will be able to produce unprecedented impacts on entire at-risk populations.
