The freshwater golden apple snail Pomacea canaliculata, native to South and Central America, and the West Indies, is now a major agricultural pest in Thailand paddy fields. There is anecdotal evidence that the Asian openbill Anastomus oscitans consumes these snails, but no reports on its predation efficiency. Our study showed that the number of storks visiting the fields correlated with a decrease in snail abundance (rs= 0.902, p= 0.0001). Storks are tactile predators and preferred adult snails… Expand

Ecology and Management of Apple Snails in Rice
TLDR
The implementation of effective quarantine directives is recommended for tropical countries that are vulnerable to exotic Apple snails to avoid further spread of apple snails. Expand
Invasive iPomacea/i snails: actual and potential environmental impacts and their underlying mechanisms.

Feeding of the leech Glossiphonia weberi on the introduced snail Pomacea bridgesii in India
TLDR
Experimental studies revealed that G. weberi prefers the snails P. bridgesii and L. (R) luteola at the same rate from amongst the many other either less or not-preferred native operculate and non-operculate snails. Expand
INVADING HERBIVORY: THE GOLDEN APPLE SNAIL ALTERS ECOSYSTEM FUNCTIONING IN ASIAN WETLANDS
TLDR
This study demonstrates how an herbivore may trigger a shift from clear water and macrophyte dominance to a turbid state dominated by planktonic algae, and is detrimental to the integrity and functioning of wetland ecosystems, and to the services these provide in Southeast Asia. Expand

TLDR
It is suggested that the major adaptive advantage of the open bill is that it gives the birdconvergent mandible tips, which assist in the grasping and carrying of molluscs as well as their extraction. Expand
Alternative foods of a diet specialist, the Snail Kite
TLDR
Although Snail Kites (Rostrhamus sociabilis) in Florida and Venezuela fed mostly on Pomacea snails, three alternative foods were documented, related to the factors that reinforce diet specialization and the ecological conditions that promote diet diversification in specialists. Expand
PREDATION ON EGGS OF THE APPLE SNAIL POMACEA CANALICULATA (GASTROPODA: AMPULLARIIDAE) BY THE FIRE ANT SOLENOPSIS GEMINATA
TLDR
The proportion of lost eggs was highly variable among egg masses, but there was no difference between day and night, and possible use of this ant as a biocontrol agent for the apple snail is considered. Expand
Sex-related differential growth in Pomacea canaliculata (Gastropoda: Ampullariidae)
TLDR
It is verified that the largest individuals in natural populations of the South American applesnail Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822) are always females, and the two other possible sources of dimorphism are analyzed, the patterns of growth and survivorship of male and female apple-snails isolated under laboratory conditions. Invasions in agriculture: assessing the cost of the golden apple snail in Asia.
TLDR
The analysis shows that the cumulative costs of the snail invasion to Philippine rice agriculture in 1990 were between USD 425 and USD 1200 mill. Expand
Natural selection by avian predators on size and colour of a freshwater snail (Pomacea flagellata)
TLDR
The ecological interaction between the Neotropical apple snail and its predators provides a powerful system to further explore the role of predation in determining evolutionary changes in snail behaviour, morphology and life history. Expand
Influence of common carp on apple snail in a rice field evaluated by a predator - prey logistic model
TLDR
The study predicts that a snail population would be eliminated in 2 years at a stocking density of 2000 carp hectare−1, if no immigration of the snail occurred, together with other reports on snail longevity. Expand
HUNTING BEHAVIOR, PREY SELECTION, AND ENERGETICS OF SNAIL KITES IN GUYANA: CONSUMER CHOICE BY A SPECIALIST
TLDR
The hunting behavior, snail size selection, and time-activity patterns of non- breeding Snail Kites were studied in Guyana rice fields and the size distribution of captured snails differed significantly from that of available snails. Expand
