Through a formalization of the working definitions of Middle Power and seapower, the paper tries to show the existence of a correlation between the energy dependence of energy supplies by sea and the “use of navies”. This latter concept has been formalized through the creation of a Navy Use Index (NUI) that underlines the importance of navies and naval forces for the states included in the sample.
