Strategies to prevent contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) are suboptimal. Erythropoietin was recently found to be cytoprotective in a variety of nonhematopoietic cells, so it was hypothesized that the nonhematopoietic erythropoietin derivative asialoerythropoietin would prevent CIN.
