Lipid-soluble antioxidants, such as alpha-tocopherol, protect cell membranes from oxidant damage. In this work we sought to determine whether the amphipathic derivative of ascorbate, ascorbate 6-palmitate, is retained in the cell membrane of intact erythrocytes, and whether it helps to protect the cells against peroxidative damage.
