}The 7SK small nuclear RNA (snRNA) is a key player in the regulation of polymerase (pol) II transcription. The 7SK RNA was long believed to be specific to vertebrates where it is highly conserved. Homologs in basal deuterostomes and a few lophotrochozoan species were only recently reported. On longer timescales, 7SK evolves rapidly with only few conserved sequence and structure motifs. Previous attempts to identify the Drosophila homolog thus have remained unsuccessful despite considerable…

An improved secondary structure model of 7SK RNA is derived, which shows that the structure is quite well-conserved across animal phyla despite the extreme divergence at sequence level.

A systematic homology search extended the collection of 7SK genes in both Arthropods and Lophotrochozoa making use of the large number of recently published invertebrates genomes to infer complete consensus structures for invertebrate 7SK RNAs.
An alternative D. melanogaster 7SK snRNP
- BiologyBMC molecular and cell biology
- 2021
It is proposed that two distinct 7SK genes might contribute to the formation of the 7SK snRNP complex in D. melanogaster and it is shown that, like dm7SK, this alternative 7SK interacts in vivo with the different partners of the P-TEFb complex.

- BiologyJournal of Molecular Evolution
- 2010
A comprehensive survey of this ncRNA family in the phylum Nematoda is reported, finding 240 new sbRNAs that show the characteristic Ro protein binding motif, and contain a region highly similar to a functionally required motif for DNA replication previously thought to be unique to vertebrate Y RNAs.

It is shown that an RNA previously suggested to be a 7SK homolog is, in fact, associated with P-TEFb, through the action of a homolog of the human HEXIM1/2 proteins (dHEXIM).

Striking similarities are observed among Euglenida, Kinetoplastida, Dinophyceae, Cnidaria, Rotifera, Nematoda, Platyhelminthes, and Tunicata that cannot be explained easily by the independent innovation of SL RNAs in each of these phyla.

By generating a specialised cDNA library from four different developmental stages of Drosophila melanogaster, 66 candidates for small non-messenger RNAs (snmRNAs) are identified and confirmed their expression by northern blot analysis and detection of two RNA species from this group implies that certain snmRNA species are processed from alternatively spliced pre-m RNAs.
