We treated 15 patients by arthrodesis of the knee after removal of an infected total knee arthroplasty, using an Ilizarov ring fixator. Eight had a failed arthrodesis by another technique. The mean age of the patients was 75 years, the mean duration of retention of the frame was 28 weeks, the mean treatment time 51 weeks, and the mean follow-up 52 months. All but one knee fused at the first attempt, a rate of union of 93%. The incidence of complications related to treatment was 80%. The length…

Knee arthrodesis with an intramedullary nail: a retrospective study
TLDR
The functional result of a successful arthrodesis was found to be comparable with that of a revised hinged total knee arthroplasty and recurrence of infection is the most challenging problem.
Arthrodesis of the knee using cannulated screws.
TLDR
Cannulated screws provide a high rate of union in arthrodesis of the knee with minimal complications, patient convenience, and a simple surgical technique.
Knee Arthrodesis Using Plate Osteosynthesis
TLDR
The literature supports plate osteosynthesis as an extremely effective technique with a low rate of complication in knee arthrodesis and this technique is used successfully in the setting of infection after total knee replacement and for other indications.
Arthrodesis of the knee after failed infected total knee arthroplasty
TLDR
In the opinion, arthrodesis of the knee is a satisfactory salvage procedure following a failed TKA, and can provide reliable expectation for a stable, painless extremity for high-functioning patients who are able to walk.
Knee arthrodesis after infected tumor mega prosthesis of the knee using an intramedullary nail for callus distraction
TLDR
The case of a 44-year-old man treated by arthrodesis followed by callus distraction after removal of an infected tumor mega prosthesis (Kotz type) is reported.
Modern Techniques in Knee Arthrodesis
TLDR
This review aims to present recent findings of knee arthrodesis procedures regarding the indications, outcomes, and prognostic factors as well as a general description of the technical aspects, advantages, and disadvantages of each specific knee ar Throdesis technique.
Knee arthrodesis – ultima ratio for the treatment of the infected knee

TLDR
The typical indications and contraindications for knee arthrodesis following septic knee diseases are shown and insight into the biomechanical and technical considerations to be kept in mind are given.
[Arthrodesis after total knee arthroplasty considering septic loosening as an example].
TLDR
The most common indications for arthrodesis are the infected knee arthroplasty with defects of the extensor mechanism, soft tissue and bone defects, and persisting infection.
Arthrodesis of the knee using a custom-made intramedullary coupled device.
TLDR
It is concluded that a customised coupled intramedullary nail can give excellent stability allowing early weight-bearing, and results in a high rate of union with minimal postoperative complications.

[Arthrodesis following knee arthroplasty].
TLDR
In 44 failed total arthroplasties of the knee joint, arthrodesis was attempted (1970-1986), the reasons for delayed union or failure had to do with reduced bone stock in the metaphysis with poor bone quality, inadequate fixation, and uncontrolled infections.
Arthrodesis of the knee following failed total knee arthroplasty.
TLDR
The technique of arthrodesis did not seem to influence the final result and external fixation most commonly had to be used because of the infections and the device was kept in place for an average of ten weeks, after which immobilization in a cast was used until the arthrodenis healed.
Failed total knee arthroplasty treated by arthrodesis of the knee using the Ace-Fischer apparatus.
TLDR
The extent of loss of bone appeared to be the most important factor influencing union of the primary arthrodesis, and the rate of success with the device that was achieved is similar to the rates obtained with the use of older external fixators.
Arthrodesis in failed total knee replacement.
TLDR
The cause of failure was technical inadequacy of the arthrodesis procedure; that is, the required stable fixation and solid bone-to-bone contact.
Intramedullary fixation for arthrodesis of the knee after infected total knee arthroplasty.
TLDR
The use of curved intramedullary rods is a convenient technique for obtaining successful arthrodesis after infected total knee arthroplasty and reported an absence of pain and the ability to ambulate with, at most, a walker.
Arthrodesis of the knee with an intramedullary nail.
TLDR
The cases of twenty patients who had an arthrodesis in which an intramedullary nail was used for stabilization were reviewed, finding that a high percentage of patients have progression to a stable fusion despite serious problems.
Arthrodesis of the knee with intramedullary nail fixation.
TLDR
Fusion of the knee with a long intramedullary nail can be safe and effective, even in the presence of infection, if the revision is performed properly and certain technical principles are followed.
Knee arthrodesis following prosthesis removal. Use of the Wagner apparatus.
  • M. Fidler
  • Medicine
The Journal of bone and joint surgery. British volume
  • 1983
TLDR
The addition of the Wagner leg-lengthening apparatus applied anteriorly and adjusted to give compression ensures rigid external fixation and results in a sound arthrodesis after the removal of infected prostheses.
Knee arthrodesis following total knee arthroplasty in rheumatoid arthritis.
TLDR
Twenty-seven knees in 23 patients, all with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis and failed total knee arthroplasty, were treated by arthrodesis, and a fusion aligned in 7 degrees +/- 5 degrees of valgus and knee flexion from zero to 30 degrees was associated with the highest rate of ar Throdesis.
Arthrodesis with dual plates after failed total knee arthroplasty.
TLDR
Fixation with dual compression plates is a useful technique for the salvage of a failed total knee arthroplasty, even when the patient has an infection, and staggering of the plates may help to prevent late stress fractures.
