Concerns about the unity and disunity of science were as strongly felt in the 4th century BC as they have been in the 20th AD. We know from Plato’s Republic VI and VII that by the middle of the 4th century BC there was a concerted intellectual effort to found such disparate natural investigations as astronomy, harmonics and optics on mathematical foundations.
