We present the results of a comparison between the optical morphologies of a complete sample of 46 southern 2 Jy radio galaxies at intermediate redshifts (0.05 < z < 0.7) and those of two control samples of quiescent early-type galaxies: 55 ellipticals at redshifts z ≤ 0.01 from the Observations of Bright Ellipticals at Yale (OBEY) survey, and 107 early-type galaxies at redshifts 0.2 < z < 0.7 in the Extended Groth Strip (EGS). Based on these comparisons, we discuss the role of galaxy…

The environments of luminous radio galaxies and type-2 quasars

We present the results of a comparison between the environments of (1) a complete sample of 46 southern 2-Jy radio galaxies at intermediate redshifts (0.05 <z< 0.7), (2) a complete sample of 20

CORRELATION BETWEEN GALAXY MERGERS AND LUMINOUS ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI

It is not yet clear what triggers the activity of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), but galaxy merging has been suspected to be one of the main mechanisms fueling the activity. Using deep optical images

The importance of galaxy interactions in triggering type II quasar activity

We present deep Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph-South optical broad-band images for a complete sample of 20 Sloan Digital Sky Survey selected type II quasars taken from Zakamska et al., with

Host galaxies of luminous z ∼ 0.6 quasars: major mergers are not prevalent at the highest AGN luminosities

Galaxy interactions are thought to be one of the main triggers of active galactic nuclei (AGN), especially at high luminosities, where the accreted gas mass during the AGN lifetime is substantial.

Stellar Photometric Structures of the Host Galaxies of Nearby Type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei

We present detailed image analysis of rest-frame optical images of 235 low-redshift (z ≲ 0.35) Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. The high-resolution

Galaxy evolution across the optical emission-line diagnostic diagrams?

The discovery of the M-sigma relation, the local galaxy bimodality, and the link between black-hole and host-galaxy properties, have raised the question whether AGN play a role in galaxy evolution.

RADIO LOUD AGNs ARE MERGERS

We measure the merger fraction of Type 2 radio-loud and radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z > 1 ?> using new samples. The objects have Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images taken with Wide

The Role of Major Mergers and Nuclear Star Formation in Nearby Obscured Quasars

We investigate the triggering mechanism and the structural properties of obscured luminous active galactic nuclei from a detailed study of the rest-frame B and I Hubble Space Telescope images of 29

THE ROLE OF BARS IN AGN FUELING IN DISK GALAXIES OVER THE LAST SEVEN BILLION YEARS

We present empirical constraints on the influence of stellar bars on the fueling of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) out to z = 0.84 using a sample of X-ray-selected AGNs hosted in luminous

A TALE OF TWO FEEDBACKS: STAR FORMATION IN THE HOST GALAXIES OF RADIO AGNs

Several lines of argument support the existence of a link between activity at the nuclei of galaxies, in the form of an accreting supermassive black hole, and star formation activity in these
