Archimedes was the first to systematically find the centers of gravity of various solid bodies and to apply this concept in determining stable configurations of floating bodies. In this paper, we discuss an error in a proof developed by Archimedes that involves determining whether a uniform, spherical cap will float stably with its base horizontal in a liquid on a spherical Earth. We present a simpler, corrected proof and discuss aspects of his proof regarding a spherical cap that is not…

Completing Book II of Archimedes’s On Floating Bodies
ConclusionOne need only glance at Archimedes’s Proposition 8 above to see thatOn Floating Bodies is several orders of magnitude more sophisticated than anything else found in ancient mathematics. It
Historical Roots of the Theory of Hydrostatic Stability of Ships
The pohysical principles of hydrostatic stability for floating systems were first pronounced by ARCHIMEDES in antiquity, although his demonstration examples were limited to simple geometrical shapes.
Non-uniqueness of the point of application of the buoyancy force
Even though the buoyancy force (also known as the Archimedes force) has always been an important topic of academic studies in physics, its point of application has not been explicitly identified yet.
The existence of noncollision singularities in newtonian systems
In this paper we solve a long-standing problem in celestial mechanics proposed by Painleve and Poincare in the last century. The problem, which concerns the nature of the singularities in the n-body
Off to infinity in finite time
W ithout collisions could the Newtonian n-body problem of point masses eject a particle to infinity in finite time? This intriguing century-old concern, which has motivated several interesting and

The Impact of Archimedes on Medieval Science
THE importance of the role played by Archimedes in the history of science can scarcely be exaggerated. He was emulated and admired in his own day and at successive periods in later times. His name
