The discovery of Archaea as one of the three domains of life by Carl Woese in 1977 (Woese and Fox, 1977) has been one of the major discoveries of the XXth century in Biology. Since then, the phylogenetic position of Archaea in the universal tree of life has been the topic of hot debates among evolutionists.
