Abstract Approximate reasoning for production planning could effectively be based on an interval-valued representation of linguistic variables. An interval-valued representation provides a framework that: (i) incorporates a dispersion about membership values, and (ii) produces a robust result compared to classical results. The proposed representation and inference is applied to a set of production problems in prototype studies. The result of one such prototype study is summarized.
