The identification/selection of appropriate patient subgroups with asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis and the performance of prophylactic carotid endarterectomy (CEA)/carotid artery stenting (CAS) exclusively on these asymptomatic patient subgroups is currently one of the "hottest" topics in vascular surgery.
