Gangliosides are neuraminic acid containing glycosphingolipids that are anchored into the lipid bilayer of the plasma membrane by their lipophilic ceramide moiety. They are overexpressed on tissues of neuroectodermal origin, particularly in tumors such as melanomas, sarcomas, neuroblastomas and astrocytomas.
