Grid computing has now been established for quite some time but the early vision has not yet been completely realised. In fact, there are several obstacles to be mastered in order to efficiently deploy applications on the Grid. The following article provides hints and considerations for the usage of a Grid infrastructure. In particular, this article provides a “real world” view that the author has gained within more than half a decade of Grid experience in all possible domains: design, development, management, deployment and education related to Grid computing. Consequently, the article goes beyond pure research goals and dives into many practical considerations and suggestions of applying Grid computing to scientific research domains such as high-energy physics and bioinformatics.
