Expand

Habitat preferences of Maculinea arion and its Myrmica host ants: implications for habitat management in Italian Alps
TLDR
It is suggested that extensive grazing is needed to maintain the two most important resources for M. arion, which represents an umbrella species and a good indicator for the conservation status of mountain grasslands. Expand
An individual based model for the conservation of the endangered Large Blue Butterfly, Maculinea arion (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae)
TLDR
A stochastic population model was developed and successfully tested on results from studies of this natural population of M. arion in the Swabian Jura (Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany), finding that the density of host ant nests and the proportion of caterpillars adopted by non-host ant Myrmica is more critical for the survival of the butterfly than thedensity of its initial foodplants. The ecology of Myrmica ants in relation to the conservation of Maculinea butterflies
TLDR
The latest summary of field data showing the pattern of host specificity by Maculinea is presented, and the current knowledge of habitat partition, colony growth and colony reproduction within communities of Myrmica ants is summarized in relation to the ecology ofMaculinea species. Expand
The effect of queen ants on the survival of Maculinea arion larvae in Myrmica ant nests
TLDR
It is suggested that queen effect can be an important cause of these deaths, and one that particularly affects populations of butterflies that breed on sites with long-established plagioclimaxes of short turf rather than short-lived grass-land successions. Expand
Successful Conservation of a Threatened Maculinea Butterfly
TLDR
The reversal of the decline of Maculinea arion (Large Blue), a charismatic specialist whose larvae parasitize Myrmica ant societies is described, providing a paradigm for other insect conservation projects. Expand
