A hydroalcoholic extract from female inflorescences of Humulus lupulus L. (HOP extract) was evaluated for its anti-influenza activity. The ability of the extract to interfere with different phases of viral replication was assessed, as well as its effect on the intracellular redox state, being unbalanced versus the oxidative state in infected cells. The radical scavenging power, inhibition of lipoperoxidation, and ferric reducing activity were assayed as antioxidant mechanisms. A phytochemical…

A Polyphenol Rich Extract from Solanum melongena L. DR2 Peel Exhibits Antioxidant Properties and Anti-Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Activity In Vitro

The results suggest the DR2B and DR2C extract as a promising new anti-HSV-1 agent, which partly counteracted the tBOOH-induced cytotoxicity, with a remarkable lowering of lactate metabolism under both normoxia and hypoxia.

Ferulic Acid From Plant Biomass: A Phytochemical With Promising Antiviral Properties

Insight is provided into the potential for valorization of FA as a potent antiviral agent and novel strategies on extraction and derivatization routes, for enhancing even further the antiviral activity of FA and potentially favor its metabolism, distribution and residence time in the human body.

An Updated Review of the Genus Humulus: A Valuable Source of Bioactive Compounds for Health and Disease Prevention

The aim of this review was to provide an up-to-date overview of the main biologically active compounds found in hops, as well as their in vitro and in vivo applications for human health and disease prevention.

Hop Extract Acts as an Antioxidant with Antimicrobial Effects against Propionibacterium Acnes and Staphylococcus Aureus

Assessment of the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial potential of a hop-CO2-extract with 50% humulone and lupulone found it to be a treatment option for acne-prone skin.

In Vitro Evaluation of Anti-Rift Valley Fever Virus, Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Activity of South African Medicinal Plant Extracts

The ability of the extracts to lower RVFV viral load and their potency to reduce free radicals is demonstrated and the antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory results revealed that extracts scavenged free radicals and suppressed the production of pro-inflammatory mediators in Vero cells.

Antiviral Effects of Polyphenols from Marine Algae

The authors focus on the antiviral potential of polyphenolic compounds (phlorotannins) from marine algae and consider the mechanisms of their action as well as other biological properties of these compounds that have effects on the progress and outcome of viral infections.
