Permanent therapy with oral anticoagulants offers the most consistent protection in patients with mechanical heart valves. Antiplatelet agents alone do not consistently protect patients with mechanical prosthetic heart valves, including patients in sinus rhythm with St. Jude valves in the aortic position.
