Aim  Antioxidants, such as vitamin A, C and E, selenium and β‐carotene, have been proposed as possible agents in the chemoprevention of colorectal cancer and have been the subject of recent trials and reviews. This review aimed to assess the present evidence on the effect of antioxidants on the incidence of colorectal neoplasms in the general population.

Chemoprevention of Colorectal Cancer.
This work reviews the prospect of chemoprevention of CRC, results from preclinical and human studies, challenges, and future directions, and suggests agents that might be used for average-risk as well as high-risk groups, and to prevent colorectal cancer recurrence after therapy.
Role of Diet in Colorectal Cancer Incidence
It is suggested that dietary factors may have a role in the development and prevention of CRC, but more research is needed on specific foods for which the evidence remains suggestive.
Antioxidants and prevention of gastrointestinal cancers
Antioxidants do not aid in the prevention of gastrointestinal cancers in the general population; however, they may act as chemopreventive agents for stomach and esophageal cancers, especially in high-risk populations.

There is an important need for prospective clinical trials and pharmacologic studies to fully evaluate the potential of vitamin C as an anticancer agent.
Dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity and Colorectal Cancer in the Italian EPIC Cohort
No significant association between dietary TAC and colorectal cancer incidence was found, however for the highest category of TAC compared to the lowest, risk of developing colon cancer was lower and increasing TAC intake was associated with significantly increasing risks of rectal cancer.

It is indicated that dietary intake of vitamin C and &bgr;-carotene, but not vitamins A and E, could reduce the risk of CRA, however, these associations seem to be limited.
Recent advances in clinical practice: colorectal cancer chemoprevention in the average-risk population
This review suggests that the following factors are associated with a decreased incidence of CRC: aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, magnesium, folate, a high consumption of fruits and vegetables, fibre and dairy products, and no evidence of a protective effect for tea, coffee, garlic, fish and soy products was found.
