  title={Antioxidant and Antitussive Properties of Gongronema Latifolium Leaves Used Locally for the Treatment of Fowl Cough in Nigeria},
  author={J. Essien and G. Ebong and E. Akpan},
The antioxidant and antitussive properties of Gongronema Latifolium used locally by Nigerian poultry farmers for the treatment of fowl cough was investigated. The phytochemical results revealed the presence of saponins (0.69mg/100g), tannins (0.0416mg/100g), alkaloids (0.046mg/100g) and flavonoids (0.016mg/100g). Triterpenes and cardiac glycosides were also present in detectable concentrations. In vivo studies on the efficacy of the plant leaves in treatments against fowl cough in Hubbard… Expand

Evaluation of Antioxidant, Immunomodulatory Activities, and Safety of Ethanol Extract and Fractions of Gongronema latifolium Fruit
Traditional use of G. latifolium fruit for general body healing and maintenance of healthy living is justified and long term administration is safe on the haematological and biochemical systems especially at lower doses and its toxicity at higher doses is reversible. Expand
Evaluation of methanol extract of Gongronema latifolium leaves singly and in combination with glibenclamide for anti-hyperglycemic effects in alloxan-induced hyperglycemic rats
The studies suggest that there is treatment benefit of combining extract of G. latifolium leaves and glibenclamide over G. Latifolinium or glibanclamide alone, and that the effects of the combination protocol were better than that of glibinclmide 5 mg/kg alone. Expand

Antimicrobial sensitivity patterns of hospital and non-hospital strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from nasal carriers.
The nasal carriage rate of Staphylococcus aureus was significantly higher in hospitalized persons - 53.8%, - than in similar persons at a local clinic - 29.8% (P less than 0.001) - in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, but unlike studies carried out elsewhere, a higher proportion of S. a Aureus strains obtained from persons at the clinic were resistant to commonly used antimicrobial agents.
