The antimicrobial property of volatiles produced by red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, against Beauveria bassiana, a common entomopathogenic fungus, was demonstrated. The germination rate of B. bassiana spores was significantly reduced after they were exposed to volatiles within an artificial ant nest. Since the air that contained the same level of O2 and CO2 as that in artificial fire ant nests did not suppress the germination rate of B. bassiana, the observed reduction of germination… 

Immune Stimulation via Wounding Alters Chemical Profiles of Adult Tribolium castaneum

It is suggested that the changes in different infochemicals may mediate immune status signaling in the context of both internal and external immune responses in groups of this non-social insect, thus showing parallels to social immunity.

Fire ant colonies reached their annual maximum population size in midwinter and their maximum biomass in spring and declined to a midsummer minimum, showing that the transition from the ergonomic to the reproductive stages is sharp, and that colonies must grow in order to produce more sexuals.

A rapid survey of the collection of the ants in the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, and some other collections, has turned up additional cases of ants in which, judging now only from externally visible structures, the metapleural gland is absent, nonfunctional, or significantly reduced.
