IO 3 - (100 ppm +) in water exhibits antimicrobial properties when taken alone or with salt. Polyiodide resin killed experimental bacteria on contact and exhibited excellent antimicrobial properties while resin loaded with IO 3 - was not effective. Therefore, polyiodide resin would be an efficient system for water disinfection.

Activated Carbon Impregnated with Elementary Iodine: Applications against Virus- and Bacteria-Related Issues
The presented results show that IodAC can be used for a wide range of applications, including as a granular disinfectant for public spaces, for water disinfection, zoonotic diseases countermeasures, post-harvest food storage, and sanitization.
Facile Synthesis of Antimicrobial Aloe Vera-“Smart” Triiodide-PVP Biomaterials
“Smart” biohybrids with triiodide inclusions have excellent antifungal and promising antimicrobial activities, with potential use against surgical site infections (SSI) and as disinfecting agents.
Antimicrobial Hexaaquacopper(II) Complexes with Novel Polyiodide Chains
The stable copper-pentaiodide complex revealed excellent inhibition zones against C. albicans WDCM 00054, and strong antibacterial activities against several pathogens, in comparison to common antibiotics.
“Smart” Antimicrobial Nanocomplexes with Potential to Decrease Surgical Site Infections (SSI)
The new compounds TCA-Ag NP-PI and Cinn-AgNP-PI are broad spectrum microbicidal agents and therefore potential coating materials for sutures to prevent Surgical Site Infections (SSI).
Antimicrobial Biomaterial on Sutures, Bandages and Face Masks with Potential for Infection Control
AV-PVP-TCA-I2 showed excellent antifungal and strong to intermediate antibacterial activities against most of the selected pathogens, especially in bandages and face masks, which has potential use for prevention or treatment of surgical site and wound infections.
“Smart” Triiodide Compounds: Does Halogen Bonding Influence Antimicrobial Activities?
The halogen bonding in the triiodide ion reduces the antibacterial activities in comparison to the inhibitory actions of pure iodine but increases the long term stability of [Na(12-crown-4)2]I3.
Inhibitory Potential of Avicennia Marina Against Bacterial Pathogens of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) From Infected Patients for Health and Sanitation
Owing to the widespread applications of mangrove plants, Avicennia marina was tested for antibacterial activity against UTI pathogens isolated from infected patients and showed that E. coli was more effective than S. aureus.
Comparative study of disinfectants for use in low-cost gravity driven household water purifiers.
Purifiers based on bromine, tincture iodine, calcium hypochlorite and sodium dichloroisocyanurate were found to be most efficient, cost effective and compact with replacement parts costing US$3.60-6.00 for every 3,000 L of water purified and are expected to present the most attractive value proposition to end users.

Iodine based water disinfection: A review
In this review, water disinfection by different formulations incorporating iodine and the mechanisms of germicidal action are discussed.
New water disinfectant: an insoluble quaternary ammonium resin-triiodide combination that releases bactericide on demand.
Strongly basic anion-exchange resins form stable, water-insoluble combinations with triiodide ions that have remarkable antibacterial properties and the irreversible nature of the antibacterial action was revealed when attempts to wash the damaged cells did not restore viability.
Iodinated P(MMA‐NVP): an efficient matrix for disinfection of water
Polymethyl methacrylate-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone P(MMA-NVP) copolymer was synthesized in an inert atmosphere by bulk polymerization using azobis-isobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. The copolymer was
Sustained release of iodine from a polymeric hydrogel device for water disinfection
2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) based polymeric hydrogels were synthesized by free-radical redox bulk polymerization technique using 1% ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as crosslinking
A comparison of the virucidal properties of chlorine, chlorine dioxide, bromine chloride and iodine
Under optimal conditions all disinfectants were effective at low concentrations, but each disinfectant responded differently to acidity and alkalinity.
Use of Iodine for Disinfection
The ideal water disinfectant would be some material that is chemically weak and unable to participate in such reactions, but, at the same time, possessing bactericidal, cysticidal, and viricidal properties equal or superior to those of chlorine.
Microbial quality of rainwater from roof surfaces
Rainwater samples (54) were tested to study efficacy of H 2 S strip test by comparing with MPN (Most Probable Number) and other tests. Both H 2 S strip test and MPN agree in approx. 65-75% of cases.

The chemistry of the formation of various species of titrable iodine in solutions of elemental iodine and iodide are described in a quantitative manner and values obtained in various computations are presented with reservation but are considered as relatively safe for use in practice.
