The three organometallic complexes [(Cis-PtII (DDH) (2,5-Dihidroxibenzensulfonic)2, RhI(CO)2Cl(2-Aminobenzothiazole) and RhI(CO)2Cl(5-Cl-2-Methilbenzothiazole)] used in this study had been previously found to have a high in vitro activity against promastigote and amastigote like forms of Leishmania donovani. Here, the cytotoxic effect of these new organometallic complexes on the J-774 macrophages were studied. Only the RhI(CO)2Cl(2-Aminobenzothiazole) complex induced substantial toxicity in the…

Palladium(II) imine ligands cyclometallated complexes with a potential leishmanicidal activity on Leishmania (L.) amazonensis

The leishmaniasis, considered a neglected disease, is caused by a protozoan from the genus Leishmania. There is an urgent need to search for safer, cheaper, and more effective treatments against

Medicinal organometallic chemistry – an emerging strategy for the treatment of neglected tropical diseases

This review focuses on the use of organometallic drug compounds in treating African sleeping sickness, Chagas disease, Chags disease, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis and echinococcosis.

Insights into the current status of privileged N-heterocycles as antileishmanial agents

In this representation, insights into the current status of privileged N-heterocycles as antileishmanial agents with particular emphasis on structure activity relationships are reviewed.

Therapeutic Organometallic Compounds

Most drugs used today are purely organic compounds. Especially after the enormous success of the cisplatin (Fig 1) in tumor treatment, interest in metal complexes has grown (Allardyce & Dyson, 2006).

DNA Metallo-Intercalators with Leishmanicidal Activity

Current knowledge of leishmaniasis is revised, including PCD-inducing drugs used clinically and those currently in the experimental and evaluation phases, especially those that have leish manicidal activity which could be associated with their interaction with the parasitic DNA.

Chapter 20 Metal-Based Therapeutics for Leishmaniasis

Despite the known toxic effect of some metal ions in humans, many metal ions are required for many critical functions in the authors' organism and scarcity of some of them even can lead to a disease.

Mutual action of anticancer and antiparasitic drugs: are there any shared targets?

Mutual action of anticancer and antiparasitic drugs, with the aim of discussing shared targets of these drugs, has been reviewed.

Evaluation of the toxicity of Rh(III) and Pt(II) complexes against Trypanosoma cruzi culture forms.

The results obtained show that complexes of Rh(III) with the highest antitumoural activity also appear to be more effective against cultured epimastigotes, and complexes [Rh(L)4X2]+X- where L is a derivative of thiazole present high activity against the parasite.

In vitro action of platinum (II) and platinum (IV) complexes on Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania donovani.

The in vitro activities of 22 neutral Pt(II) complexes, 4 Pt(IV) complex salts, and one Pt( II) complex salt on epimastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi and promastigotes of Leishmania donovani were studied and the known antiparasitic activities of the nifurtimox and pentamidine molecules were confirmed.

Anti-Candida activity of four antifungal benzothiazoles.

All the compounds tested were highly active on a nystatin-resistant C. albicans mutant, with IC50s of the order of 10(-6) M-10(-5) M, which means better activity than IV.

In vitro action of new organometallic compounds against Trypanosomatidae protozoa.

Of the 10 rhodium complexes tested three proved 100% efficient in inhibiting the growth of the epimastigote forms of T. cruzi while only one worked against the promastigotes of L. donovani.

In vitro activity of organometallic complexes of Ir, Pt and Rh on Trypanosoma b. gambiense, T. b. rhodesiense and T. b. brucei.

A series of organometallic drugs were tested in a photometric in vitro assay for trypanocidal activity against the three subspecies of the Trypanosoma brucei group and the four Pentamidine complexes were the most active compounds and showed activities comparable to that of PentAmidine.

Antiparasitic agents. 5. Synthesis and anthelmintic activities of novel 2-heteroaromatic-substituted isothiocyanatobenzoxazoles and benzothiazoles.

In mice experimentally infected with Nematospiroides dubius (nematode) and Hymenolepis nana (tapeworm), three derivatives, i.e., 5-isothiocyanato-2-(2-furyl)benzoxazole, show 100% nematocidal activity and two derivatives (5 and 21) show good nematOCidal activity in sheep.

Activity of Antitumor Drugs Against African Trypanosomes

Of 49 compounds known to have antitumor properties, 6 were found to have significant activity against Trypanosoma rhodesiense infections in mice, and the percentage of “hits” from these known antitumors was approximately twice as great as when other means are employed for the selection of compounds for this test system.
