This study is focused on the in vitro evaluation of the hemolysis inhibitory activity of aqueous extracts of six plants used in the traditional treatment of sickle cell disease in Benin: Morinda lucida, Uvaria chamae, Lonchocarpus cyanescens, Croton zambesicus, Raphiostylis beninensis and Xylopia aethiopica. AS and SS red blood cells are subjected to hyposmotic impact with decreasing concentrations of NaCl solution. All the aqueous extracts of the six plants showed a better contribution in…

The Anticandidal and Toxicity Properties of Lampranthus francisci

TLDR
L. francisci has some fungicidal activity and boosts the growth of immune cells, thus validating its use in ethnomedicine and potential leads for the isolation of immune stimulatory compounds.

Reduction of Hydrogen Peroxide-Induced Erythrocyte Damage by Leaf Extracts of Buchanania Lanzan Spreng as a Potential Natural Antioxidant

Buchanania lanzan Spreng belongs to family Anacardiaceae commonly known as priyal or Chironji. This species has high socio-economic value providing livelihood to tribal population within the area and

Haematological and Genotoxicity Evaluations of Phytochemical Compounds from n-Hexane Extract of Uvaria chamae Stem on Selected Organs in Mice

TLDR
The present study showed that the phytochemicals present in the n-Hexane extract of Uvaria chamae stems may play protective role in the genomic DNA of liver and testis tissues and also may induce hematological changes which may enhance the immune system.

Whole plant screenings for flavonoids and tannins contents in castor plant (Ricinus communis L.) and evaluation of their biological activities.

TLDR
Low inhibitory effects on the population proliferation of Streptococcus aureus and Krebsellia halize were observed at increasing concentrations of flavonoids and tannins extracts, which implies that Castor plant possesses essential phytochemicals, which could be exploited for medicinal/pharmaceutical applications.

IN-VITRO STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF AQUEOUS EXTRACTS OF Olax subscorpioidea AND Lonchocarpus cyanescens ON MONOAMINE OXIDASE ACTIVITY FROM RAT BRAIN

TLDR
In the study of enzyme kinetics, aqueous extract Olax subscorpioidea shows a reversible noncompetitive inhibition, while that of Lonchocarpus cyanescens shows a trace inhibitory effect.

Phytochemical Screening and Antioxidant Activities of Some Selected Medicinal Plants Used for Malaria Therapy in Southwestern Nigeria

TLDR
The free radical scavenging (antioxidant) activities of these plants probably contribute to the effectiveness of the above plants in malaria therapy.

Effects of aqueous extracts of Garcinia kola seeds on membrane stability of HbAA, HbAS and HbSS human erythrocytes

The effects of water-extract of the seed of Garcinia kola (Henckel), a popularly consumed seed known as ‘bitter kola' in Nigeria, on the stabilities of erythrocyte membranes from HbAA, HbAS and HbSS

Effects of aqueous extracts of Zanthoxylum macrophylla roots on membrane stability of human erythrocytes of different genotypes

TLDR
The effects of aqueous extract of Zanthoxylum macrophylla roots on the membrane stabilities of human erythrocyte from HbAA, HbAS and HbSS blood were investigated and the determination of mean corpuscular fragility (MCF) showed that the aqueously plant extract increased the MCF values of the various ery Throatcytes.

Phytochemical Composition and Biological Activities of Uvaria chamae and Clerodendoron splendens

TLDR
The extracts and aspirin were found to inhibit carrageenan-induced paw oedema on albino rats and mice with a strong activity in aspirin having (80.43 %) inhibition while U. chamae and C. splendens have 69.57% and 47.83% inhibition respectively.

Phenylalanine is the predominant antisickling agent in Cajanus cajan seed extract.

TLDR
Antisickling experiments based on the estimated amount of free phenylalanine in the methanol (water-soluble) extract of the seeds showed that the presence of this amino acid alone could account for about 70% of the antisickling potency of Cajanus cajan seed extract.

TLDR
A wealth of information is produced on the mechanisms by which a single base substitution in the gene encoding the human β-globin subunit, with the resulting replacement of β6 glutamic acid by valine, leads to the protean and devastating clinical manifestations of sickle cell disease.
